27th World Congress of Architects

Every three years, the International Union of Architects holds a World Congress, which brings together professional architects and students for discussions on the most important issues directly related to their professional practice.

Meetings, discussions, exhibitions, site visits and festivals held during the Congress provide a unique platform for the exchange of views and cultural contacts between professional colleagues and students. Since 1948, twenty-six Congresses have been held. Each Congress takes 3-4 days, and at the end, the General Assembly takes place. At the General Assembly, the UIA Bureau, which is completing its term of work, present report about the past three-year period. Members of the General Assembly choose the new composition of the UIA Bureau and Council, as well as the venue of the Congress, which will be held in six years.

The Union of Architects of Azerbaijan invites all architects to participate in the 27th UIA World Congress of Architects, which will be held on July 19-23, 2020 in Rio de Janeiro, under the theme “All the worlds. Just one world. Architecture 21”.

At the beginning of this year, on January 18, 2019, the Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, in the presence of the mayor of the city of Marcello Crivella and the President of the International Union of Architects (UIA) Thomas Vonier, announced the appointment of the city of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) the first UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture in 2020.

UNESCO is authorised to designate the world capital of architecture in accordance with the UNSECO-UIA cooperation agreement concluded on November 23, 2018 in Paris. The World Congress will take place in the centre of Rio de Janeiro in the Capanema Palace. Throughout the year, debates, lectures, exhibitions and other cultural events will be held aimed at improving the level of architecture and architectural culture of the city in accordance with the Millennium Goals and the UN objectives.

During the Congress, an awarding ceremony will be held when the best professionals will be awarded the UIA Gold Medals and Prizes, and the winners of the student competition will receive prizes and diplomas. As always, the Congress will end with the approval and promulgation of a final document summarizing the work of the forum participants.

In addition, within the framework of the Congress, the World Forum of UNESCO Cities will be held on July 17-18, 2020, which will bring together mayors of the headquarters cities of world congresses, political, architectural, business and public circles to reflect on the future of our cities.
